Zonker

The Zonker put a full rabbit strip on a hook and let the fur do the swimming - the flowing, breathing baitfish that big lazy predators find impossible to ignore.

Why carry it
Rabbit-strip swimming action

Nothing man-made moves like wet rabbit fur: every fiber breathes at any speed, even hanging still in current. The Zonker - a rabbit strip over a flash body - converts that biology into the fluid, wounded swimming that provokes the big fish which watch rigid flies pass unmolested.

What it imitates

A soft-bodied baitfish - or leech, or small trout - the strip's undulation reads as living muscle.

When & where it wins

Big-fish water: brown-trout rivers at dusk, lake dropoffs, pike bays, sea-trout night beats; slow cold water where fur keeps working when strips stop.

How to fish it

Slow strips with long pauses - the fur works FOR you at rest; swing it, jig it, hang it in the current below cover. Less angler, more rabbit.

Sizes & variants

2-8 in natural, olive, white, black; conehead versions for depth; the whole 'strip fly' universe (Dolly Llama, string leeches) is Zonker descent.

Tying notes

The two-point tie-down (front + rear of strip) is the one skill; wet rabbit casts heavy - rod-weight accordingly.

Common mistakes

Fast-stripping past the fish that wanted it slow, under-gunned rods lobbing wet rabbit, and skipping black-at-night, where the silhouette owns.
