Fishing the weeds.
Aquatic plants are where the fish are - cover, oxygen and food in one place. But a wall of green can look like a wall of nothing until you learn to read it. Here is how fish use vegetation, and how to catch them in it without leaving your lure hanging on every cast.
The one idea: fish the edges and openings of green, living weed, and go weedless. Most fish in a weed bed are sitting on its outer wall, in its holes, or under its matted roof - not buried randomly in the middle.
Why weeds hold fish
- Aquatic plants are the reef of a lake - they give fish the three things they need in one place: cover to hide and ambush from, oxygen from daytime photosynthesis, and food, because the invertebrates and baitfish that predators eat live in the salad.
- Predators like bass, pike and pickerel use weed edges and pockets as ambush points, sitting in the shade and darting out at anything that passes.
- Panfish and baitfish shelter deep inside the vegetation, which is exactly why the predators patrol its edges.
- One catch about oxygen: healthy green weed makes oxygen by day but consumes it at night, so at dawn - and in dying, browning weed - the oxygen inside a thick bed can drop and push fish out to the edges. Green and growing is what you want; brown and rotting is a place fish leave.
The kinds of vegetation, and how fish use each
- Submerged weed (milfoil, hydrilla, coontail, cabbage/pondweed, eelgrass) grows up from the bottom and is the richest fish habitat. Fish relate to its outer wall - the 'weedline' - and to holes, points and inside turns within it.
- Emergent plants (reeds, bulrush, cattails, pickerelweed) stand up out of the water along shorelines and shallow flats - classic shallow ambush cover, especially early and late in the day.
- Floating-leaf plants (lily pads, spatterdock) shade the water and give overhead cover; fish sit in the shade under the canopy and hunt the stem stalks below.
- Surface mats (matted, 'topped-out' hydrilla or milfoil, plus duckweed and algae mats) form a roof over the water. Big fish tuck into the cool, shaded, low-light world beneath - reached by punching through or working the edges.
How to fish it - edges, holes and mats
- Fish the edges first. The deep outer weedline is the single most reliable spot; run a lure right along that wall and pay attention to points, pockets and inside corners where fish stage.
- Work the holes and openings inside a bed - a sand pocket, a spring, a gap in the mat - as they concentrate fish and let you drop a bait straight in.
- Isolated clumps beat endless uniform weed: a lone patch of grass on a flat is a fish magnet because it's the only cover around.
- For matted vegetation, 'punch' through it: a heavy tungsten weight pinned tight to a compact soft plastic crashes through the canopy to the fish below. Over pads and scattered mats, a hollow-body frog walked across the top draws explosive strikes.
- Match your approach to the season - through spring and summer, find the greenest, thickest healthy weed; in autumn, as beds die back and brown, fish abandon the rotting weed, so hunt out the last stands of living green.
Tackle that beats the salad
- Braided line is the standard here - it has no stretch to drive a hook home through cover and it slices through weed on the retrieve so you can pull a fish out of the stuff. See the line guide for where braid fits.

- Heavy enough gear to winch a fish up and out before it buries you - thick vegetation is no place for ultralight tackle.
- Keep it snag-resistant: bladed jigs with weed guards, Texas rigs and frogs beat exposed trebles anywhere the weed is thick.
Who lives in the weeds
- Largemouth bass are the headline weed fish - they live on weed edges, in pockets and under mats through the warm months.
- Pike, musky and pickerel hang on weed edges and points, using the wall as an ambush line for passing prey.
- Bluegill, crappie and other panfish shelter in and around the vegetation; work the edges and openings with small baits.
- Where the weed meets deeper water or a drop-off, you get the best of both - cover and an escape route - and that transition is worth extra casts.
Don't spread it: clean, drain, dry
- Some of the best fish-holding weed is also invasive - Eurasian watermilfoil, hydrilla and water chestnut choke waterways and hitch rides between lakes on boats, trailers and gear as tiny fragments.
- Before you leave a launch: remove all plant fragments from the boat, motor, trailer and nets; drain every livewell, bilge and bucket; and let gear dry, or rinse it, before the next water.
- Never move plants, water or 'bait bucket' contents from one lake to another - that is how most infestations start.
- It is not only courtesy; moving aquatic invasives is illegal in many states. A choked, oxygen-starved lake is a dead fishery for everyone.
