Rigging a fishing kayak.

A kayak gets you into skinny, quiet water no boat can reach - for the price of a good reel, and no launch ramp needed. But a fishing kayak is a small boat, and how you rig it decides whether a day out is a joy or a wet, tangled mess. Here's the setup that works.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety is not optional on a kayak. Wear a proper PFD (life jacket) every time - not stowed, worn. Leash yourself or your paddle, carry a whistle and a light, tell someone your plan and return time, dress for the water temperature (cold water kills fast, whatever the air is doing), and know how to re-enter your kayak from the water before you need to. When in doubt, don't launch.
๐Ÿ›ถThe kayak itself

A sit-on-top is the standard fishing platform - self-draining, stable and easy to climb back onto.

TipPrioritise stability and weight capacity over speed. Check the rated capacity covers you plus all your gear, with margin.

๐ŸŽฃRod holders

Flush-mount holders behind the seat carry rods while you paddle; adjustable track-mount holders put a rod right where you want it.

TipTwo flush mounts behind you and one adjustable up front covers most fishing. Leash every rod - they go overboard fast.

โš“Anchoring & holding

An anchor trolley lets you set an anchor and swing the boat to any angle; a stake-out pole pins you in the shallows; a drift chute slows you in wind.

TipIn current, never anchor hard from the bow or side - it can flip a kayak. Use the trolley and anchor from the stern, and carry a knife to cut free.

๐Ÿ“ฆCrate & storage

A milk-crate behind the seat is the classic tackle hub - rod holders zip-tied to the sides, trays inside, everything in reach.

TipKeep the deck clear of loose line and tackle. Anything not tied down should be in the crate or a hatch, or it's gone if you tip.

๐Ÿ“กElectronics

A small fish-finder mounts to a track or the gunwale, with the transducer in a scupper hole or on an arm, run off a little sealed battery.

TipWaterproof the connections and mount the battery high and dry. A phone in a waterproof case handles GPS and maps for free.

๐Ÿ›ŸPaddle, pedal & net

Pedal drives keep your hands free to fish; a paddle is simpler and lighter. A long-handled net and a pair of fish grips land the catch over a low, tippy gunwale.

TipLeash the paddle too - a kayak blows away from a swimming angler faster than you'd believe.
