Mop Fly
The Mop Fly is a strand of cleaning-mop chenille on a jig hook - fly fishing's most controversial pattern, banned from some competitions and mounted on others' podiums.
Somebody noticed that the finger-like strands of a microfiber car-wash mop look exactly like a crane-fly larva, tied one to a hook, and split fly fishing in half. Purists sneer; scoreboards don't. The Mop is chubby, wiggly, absurdly effective on everything from wild browns to stocked rainbows, and your conscience is your own affair.
What it imitates
A crane-fly larva or caddis grub if you're generous; 'a soft delicious cylinder' if you're honest. Fish vote the second reading.
When & where it wins
Everywhere nymphs work; devastating on stocked and pressured water alike; high/off-color flows especially (chartreuse mop in mud is a cheat code).
How to fish it
Dead-drift like any heavy nymph - Euro point fly or indicator anchor; the strand quivers on its own.
