Take Sawyer's Pheasant Tail, add a tungsten bead and a collar of shocking pink ice dubbing, and you have the fly that anchors more Euro-nymphing rigs than any other in America. The 'hot spot' - a nonsense flash of color on a natural body - shouldn't work as well as it does; competition results say otherwise, loudly.
What it imitates
A mayfly nymph with a question mark - natural pheasant body, unnatural pink trigger; eggs-and-legs theories abound, fish don't explain.
When & where it wins
Euro rigs on any river, pressured tailwaters especially; a top-three confidence pattern of the modern nymphing school.
How to fish it
Tight-line dead-drift as point or dropper; also perfectly happy under an indicator or hopper. Fish it wherever you'd fish a PT, plus the days PT gets ignored.

12-18; collar in pink (standard), orange, chartreuse; jig-hook versions ride hook-up and snag less.

Common mistakes
