After Paul Elias won with the Alabama rig on Lake Guntersville in October 2011, B.A.S.S. limited its Classic and Elite Series anglers to a single lure from February 2012, and the FLW Tour announced in 2013 that it would no longer allow umbrella rigs - because it works. Five wire arms swim five paddle-tail swimbaits as a moving bait school, and suspended cold-water bass attack the 'school' with a violence single lures rarely trigger. The legality note is not fine print: states set their own limits on how many of the lures may carry hooks - Tennessee's wildlife agency spelled out its rule in 2011 - so confirm your state's rule before the first cast.
What it is & why it works
A jighead-nosed wire harness spreading 3-5 arms (often plus bladed teasers), each ending in a swimbait. Predators target schools and pick stragglers - the rig hands them the whole scene.
When to use it
