Slip Bobber Rig

The slip bobber slides freely on the line until a tiny knot stops it at YOUR chosen depth - float fishing five meters down while still casting like a champ.

Fixed floats die past a rod-length of depth - you can't cast three meters of dangling line. The slip bobber solves it with elegance: the float slides freely, a movable stop knot sets the depth, and the whole rig reels down compact for casting. Crappie over deep brush, walleye on a 6-meter reef, suspended anything: one rig, any depth.

What it is & why it works

A hollow-core float sliding on the line between a bead and an adjustable stop knot. Cast compact, then the line slips through until the knot hits the float - bait riding exactly at the set depth, visibly.

When to use it

Any suspended fish deeper than ~1.5 m: crappie over brush piles, walleye on structure, slip-bobbering leeches at dusk, steelhead in deep slots, pier fishing.

How to set it up

Thread on the stop knot (pre-tied tubes are easiest), then a small bead, then the slip float, then weight (split shot or egg) and hook/jig. Slide the knot to set depth - it reels through guides harmlessly.

Fishing it

Set depth so bait hangs just above fish/cover, cast beyond, twitch it back to position. The float's job is disappearing - when it does, tighten and sweep.

Variations & sizing

Lighted floats for night crappie; weighted floats cast farther; jig-plus-bait beneath doubles attraction; wagglers are the Euro refinement.

Common mistakes

Forgetting the bead (knot pulls into the float), setting depth by guess instead of testing bottom first, and striking at every wobble - wait for it to GO.
