Santee Cooper Rig

A slip-sinker catfish rig with one addition - a small float on the leader that lifts the bait out of the muck and into the strike zone. Catfish country's favorite tweak.

Drag a plain slip-sinker rig through a soft-bottom reservoir and your bait plows mud where catfish can't find it. The Santee Cooper rig (named for the South Carolina lakes) adds a 5 cm peg float to the leader, hovering the cut bait a hand-width off bottom - visible, smellable, and directly at whisker level. It turned drift-fishing for cats into a system.

What it is & why it works

Fish-finder base (sliding sinker, bead, swivel) plus a cigar float pegged mid-leader: the bait rides lifted and fluttering while the weight tends bottom. Off-the-muck presentation = found bait.

When to use it

Catfish everywhere soft bottom exists: reservoir drifting ('drift-and-drag' spreads), anchored river sets, suspended summer channels and blues.

How to set it up

Slide a flat 'no-roll' or egg sinker on the main, bead, swivel, then 45-75 cm leader with a 4-6 cm foam peg float threaded mid-leader, circle hook (5/0-8/0) with cut shad or perch.

Fishing it

Drift at 0.5-1 km/h dragging the spread, or soak on anchor; rods in holders, circles do the setting - reel tight when the rod loads and stays loaded.

Variations & sizing

Float closer to the hook = higher lift; double-float for big suspended baits; the 'slinky' weight version slides through snags.

Common mistakes

No float on soft bottom (the original sin this rig fixes), striking circle hooks, and drifting too fast - catfish chase reluctantly; slow is the pace.
