Knocker Rig

On coral and rockpile, leaders wrapped around structure lose rigs by the dozen - so Florida snapper fishing evolved the knocker: an egg sinker sliding on the leader sits directly on the hook eye, taking bait straight down into the hole and 'knocking' against the hook. One compact package drops clean, and when you lift, everything leaves together.

What it is & why it works

Egg sinker riding ON the hook eye, free-sliding on the leader above. The bait falls nose-first into structure; on the lift the sinker can slide away letting the bait flutter - but there's no trailing leader to wrap the reef.

When to use it

Reef and wreck snapper (yellowtail, mangrove, mutton), grouper holes, rockpiles anywhere - snaggy vertical country where standard leaders donate tackle.

How to set it up

Slide an egg sinker (1/2-3 oz by depth/current) onto 40-80 lb fluoro leader, tie a strong circle hook so the sinker rests on the eye - NOAA Fisheries notes that circle hooks are required when fishing with natural bait for reef fish in federal waters of the Gulf, and other regions set their own hook rules, so check yours; bait with cut fish, whole sardine or shrimp.

Fishing it

Drop to structure, keep near-tight, feel the tap-tap - give a beat (snapper mouth first), then reel down and lift steadily AWAY from the rocks; the first three meters decide everything.

Variations & sizing

Lighter 'chicken-knockers' up the chum slick; heavy versions for deep grouper (with the get-them-up-fast rule - and release gear aboard: in Gulf federal waters the law requires a venting tool or descending device rigged and ready to use when fishing for reef fish).

Common mistakes

Slack drops that let fish run INTO the hole before you tighten, undersized leader in rock, and slow lifts - hooked reef fish get one direction: up, immediately.
