Fish Finder Rig
The fish finder slides the sinker on the main line above a swivel and leader - a surf-soaking standard that lets wary fish run with the bait before feeling any weight.
Stand on any surf beach and most rods you see are soaking a fish finder rig: pyramid sinker on a sliding clip, bead, swivel, then a short leader to a circle hook and bait. The slide is the trick - a striper or drum picks up the chunk and moves off feeling only line, not lead, until the circle hook does its quiet work in the corner of the jaw.
What it is & why it works
A sinker slider (or slide-through sinker) on the main line, stopped by bead+swivel, with 30-60 cm of leader to the hook. Weight anchors in the wash; bait and fish move independently of it.
When to use it
Surf fishing above all (stripers, drum, whiting), pier and bottom soaking anywhere, catfish rivers - any 'cast a natural bait and wait' situation with current or wave action.
How to set it up
Slide the sinker clip on the main line, add bead, tie a strong swivel, then a mono/fluoro leader to a circle hook sized to the bait (2/0 whiting → 8/0 chunks). Pyramid sinkers grip sand; sputnik weights hold heavy surf.
Fishing it
Cast beyond the bar or into the trough, tighten to the weight, rod in holder or hand. With circle hooks: when the rod loads, DON'T strike - reel tight and lift; the hook sets itself.
Variations & sizing
Long 'pulley rigs' for distance casting; double-drop fish finders; wire leaders where toothy fish patrol.
Common mistakes
Striking circle hooks (pulls the bait away), leaders so long the bait helicopter-tangles on the cast, and weights too light to hold - re-anchoring drags the bait unnaturally.
