Ned Rig

The Ned rig - a stubby buoyant stick on a light mushroom head - stands up off the bottom and gets bit when absolutely nothing else works, the modern king of tough-day finesse.

The Ned rig looks like nothing: a stubby 2.5-3 inch piece of buoyant soft plastic on a light mushroom-shaped jighead. It is also, on tough days, the closest thing to a guaranteed bite in modern bass fishing. The buoyant body stands up off the bottom like a feeding creature whenever the rig rests, and smallmouth and pressured largemouth eat it with a confidence they show nothing else.

What it is & how it works

A short, buoyant (ElaZtech-style) stick bait on a 1/16-1/5 oz mushroom jighead. The flat head sits on bottom while the buoyant tail floats up - every pause leaves the bait standing, tail waving, an easy defenseless meal.

When & where it shines

Clear water, pressured lakes, cold fronts, smallmouth rivers and lakes, deep clean bottoms - any time fish are following and refusing. It is the closer: the rig you tie on when the day is failing.

How to fish it

Less is the whole method: drag it slowly, hop it gently, and mostly let it sit - dead-sticking is legal and lethal. Bites feel like a tick or growing weight; reel into the fish rather than swinging.

Tackle & rigging

Light-medium spinning rod, 10-15 lb braid to a 6-8 lb fluorocarbon leader. Use genuinely buoyant plastics - the stand-up tail is the technique - and never rig it weedless-heavy; the open light hook is the point.

Colors & sizes

Green pumpkin, coppertreuse and black-blue; 2.5-3 inch bodies on 1/10-1/6 oz heads for most work, lighter shallow, 1/5 oz deep.

Common mistakes

Overworking it (the pause IS the presentation), heavy line that kills the fall and drag, and swinging for the fences on a light-wire hook - lean and reel.
