Buzzbait

The buzzbait is the chainsaw of topwaters: a wire frame with a delta blade that churns, squeaks and clacks across the surface on a plain steady retrieve. It doesn't imitate anything in nature - it just triggers something ancient in a bass's brain. Because you simply cast and reel, it's the easiest topwater to fish, and because it moves fast, it's the quickest way to find aggressive shallow fish on any given morning.

What it is & how it works

A safety-pin wire bait with a rotating delta blade above a skirted head and single upturned hook. The blade churns air into the water - noise, bubbles, wake - while the semi-weedless design slips past cover.

When & where it shines

Shallow cover in low light and wind ripple: grass edges, laydowns, dock rows, bank shade - from late spring (post-spawn) through the fall shad chase. A great high-speed "are they shallow?" search bait.

How to fish it

Start reeling the moment it lands and keep it steady - just fast enough to keep the blade gurgling on top. Bump cover when you can. If fish slap and miss, hang a trailer hook or slow down half a beat.

Tackle & rigging

A 6'10"-7'2" medium-heavy casting rod, high-speed reel (7:1+, to get it up quickly), 17-20 lb mono or 30-40 lb braid. Tie direct.

Colors & sizes

White in most conditions, black at night and in muddy water, chartreuse-white in stain. 1/4-3/8 oz covers nearly everything; clacker models add sound in chop.

Common mistakes

Reeling so fast the bait blows out, giving up after missed slaps (add a trailer hook instead), and fishing it only over open water - the strikes live tight to cover.
