Kahle Hook

A wide-gap, open-bend bait hook that sits between a J and a circle - it holds bulky live and cut bait and hooks well without a hard, timed set.

The Kahle is the wide-mouthed bait hook: an open, flat-sided bend with a big gap that swallows a chunk of cut bait, a live shad or a gob of shrimp and still leaves point exposed. It hooks somewhere between a J and a circle - more forgiving of a mistimed set than a J, more aggressive on the strike than a circle - which makes it a favourite of catfish and inshore bait anglers who fish rod-in-hand.

What it is

A wide-gap, open-bend hook (flat-sided profile) for bulky live and cut baits, hooking with a forgiving sweep rather than a hard timed set.

When to use it

Catfish on cut and live bait, inshore live-lining for redfish and drum, and general big-bait bottom fishing where a wide gape must hold bait and still hook cleanly.

How to rig & set it

Thread cut bait or hook live bait so the wide gape stays open; fish on a fish-finder or bottom rig. Reel to tight and sweep-lift firmly - the wide gap forgives timing better than a J.

Sizing

J-numbering, run large for the gape: 2/0-5/0 covers most catfish and inshore bait work.

Strengths & weaknesses

Holds bulky bait, forgiving hookset, strong. Weakness: not a true self-setting circle, so for pure dead-stick release fishing a circle still hooks fish cleaner in the jaw corner.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with a circle and refusing to set at all, overloading the gape with bait, and using it where regulations require inline circles for release.
