Drop-Shot Hook

The drop-shot rig hangs a bait above a bottom weight, and the drop-shot hook is what makes it hover right: a small, sharp, light-wire hook tied with a Palomar so it stands out perpendicular from the line, point up. Nose-hook a finesse worm and it quivers in place at eye level over rocks and beds - the deadliest presentation there is for pressured, staring fish.

What it is

A small, light-wire finesse hook (often a specialised octopus or wide-gap style) tied to project horizontally off the line for a drop-shot rig.

When to use it

Drop-shotting finesse plastics for pressured bass and perch - clear water, vertical structure, sight-fishing, and any tough-bite situation where a hovering, twitching bait beats everything moving faster.

How to rig & set it

Palomar-knot the hook leaving a long tag, then pass the tag back down through the eye so the hook points UP; clip the weight on the tag below. Nose-hook a 3-4 in finesse worm. Do NOT hammer-set - reel-lean into the fish (light wire).

J-numbering, small: size 1-2 for typical finesse worms; the light wire pairs with light spinning line.

Strengths & weaknesses

Unbeatable finesse hovering and hook-up on light bites. Weakness: the light wire and small size mean it's a finesse-only tool - not for heavy cover or hard-pulling fish.

What costs you hookups

Skipping the tag-back-through-eye step (hook hangs down, misses fish), a bass-boat hookset that straightens the wire, and oversizing so the bait can't hover freely.
