Aberdeen Hook

The Aberdeen is thin-wire and long-shanked, and both features are the point. The fine wire slips through a minnow or a cricket with barely a wound, so the bait lives and wriggles for hours; the long shank makes unhooking fast and gives a bite of reach past small sharp teeth. And when it snags rock or timber, the light wire bends open under steady pull rather than breaking your line - you straighten it and fish on.

What it is

A long-shank hook made of fine, light wire, built to minimise damage to small live bait and to bend (not snap) out of snags.

When to use it

Panfish and crappie on live minnows, worms and crickets, especially around brush and rock where snags are constant; light-line float fishing where a delicate bait is the whole game.

How to rig & set it

Hook a minnow lightly through the lips or just under the dorsal so it swims; fish under a float or on a light jighead. Set gently - the fine wire hooks easily and a hard set on a big fish can straighten it.

Sizing

J-numbering, small: sizes 6-2 cover most panfish minnow work; the light wire pairs with light line.

Strengths & weaknesses

Kind to bait, cheap, self-releasing from snags, easy unhooking. Weakness: the light wire flexes or straightens on larger fish - it's a small-quarry specialist, not a hook for anything that pulls hard.

What costs you hookups

Using it on fish too big for the wire (it straightens), setting too hard, and expecting it to survive around genuinely toothy species.
