Braid rewired modern fishing: eight carriers of gel-spun polyethylene woven into a line so thin for its strength that a 30 lb spool casts like old 8 lb mono - with essentially zero stretch, so a tick at 40 meters arrives at your finger like a doorbell. Pair it with an invisible fluoro leader and you have the default setup of contemporary angling; understand its no-stretch, high-visibility trade-offs and it has almost no downside left.
What it is
Multiple strands (4, 8, or more carriers) of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene braided into a supple, non-stretch line - measured honestly by diameter-vs-strength ratios mono can't approach.
Strengths
Insane strength-to-diameter (capacity, casting distance, deep-water thinness); zero stretch = telegraph-wire sensitivity and instant hooksets; no memory ever; floats (topwater friend); lasts years on a spool.
Weaknesses
Highly visible - a leader is near-mandatory in clear water; zero stretch punishes stiff rods and locked drags (pulled hooks); slices skin under load; wind knots on spinning gear if spooled loose; poor abrasion story per-strand around sharp rock.
Where it wins
Almost everywhere as main line: grass fishing (it cuts weeds), frogs and punching, deep jigging, surf distance, spinning finesse (thin braid + long fluoro leader), musky/pike frameworks.
Knots & handling
Braid-specific knots or extra turns - Palomar is reliable; standard clinch slips. Learn ONE braid-to-leader knot well (FG for thin, double-uni for quick). Spool under real tension over a mono backing layer so it can't slip-spin on the arbor.
Common mistakes
No leader over clear water, hammer-hooksets with no stretch anywhere in the system (add rod cushion or drag slip), grabbing running braid with bare fingers, and loose spooling that becomes next cast's wind-knot.
