Overview
The broadbill swordfish is a powerful, deep-dwelling gladiator of the open ocean, prized both as a heavyweight sport fish and as one of the finest eating fish in the sea. The rise of deep-drop daytime fishing has made this once-nocturnal giant a thrilling modern target.
Identification
Swordfish have a stout, scaleless body, a large eye, a tall stiff dorsal fin, and a long flat "sword" bill - broader and flatter than a marlin's round spear. They lack pelvic fins and body stripes.
Range & Habitat
They roam temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, spending days in cold deep water hundreds of fathoms down and rising toward the surface at night to feed.
Behavior & Diet
Swordfish are strong, solitary predators that use the sword to slash squid and fish, migrating vertically each day between the deep and the surface.
Best Seasons
They can be caught year-round in warm offshore water, with daytime deep-dropping and nighttime surface fishing both productive depending on region.
How to Catch Them
Deep-drop rigged baits with lights and heavy weights to the daytime depths, or drift rigged squid at night near the surface; a slow, deliberate approach is key.
Tackle & Rigs
Heavy offshore conventional gear, electric or stout manual reels for deep-dropping, heavy leaders, and rigged squid or fish baits with lights and lead.
Landing, Handling & Release
Fight the fish steadily from great depth; handle harvested fish with care and release undersized or unwanted fish. Watch the sword and the powerful thrashing at the boat.
Table Quality
Swordfish is superb - firm, meaty, mild steaks perfect for the grill; note that as a large predator it carries higher mercury, so eat in moderation.
Common Mistakes
Underpowered gear for deep-dropping and mishandling a dangerous sword at the boat.
Regulations & Conservation
Swordfish are managed with permits, minimum sizes and limits; a federal HMS permit is required. Always confirm the current NOAA regulations before targeting them. We do not give legal advice.
FAQ
Day or night? Both - deep-drop by day, surface drift by night.
Good eating? Excellent grilled - but mind the mercury and eat in moderation.
