Overview
The Pacific bonito is a hard-fighting little tuna relative that thrills nearshore West Coast anglers with fast runs and willing bites. Abundant and accessible from boats and piers, it is a favorite light-tackle target and a fine fresh-eating and bait fish.
Identification
Pacific bonito are torpedo-shaped and steel-blue above with silver sides marked by slanting dark stripes running along the back, and small teeth. The oblique back stripes distinguish them from tunas and mackerel.
Range & Habitat
They range along the Pacific Coast from California southward, schooling in nearshore and offshore water and moving inshore with warm water and bait.
Behavior & Diet
Bonito are fast schooling predators that chase anchovies and small fish, boiling on the surface and readily taking lures and bait. They travel in fast-moving packs.
Best Seasons
The fishery is best in the warm months when bonito move inshore with the bait, often within reach of piers and small boats.
How to Catch Them
Casting jigs and small lures into boiling schools, trolling feathers to find them, and fishing bonito splashers with a fly or small lure; they hit hard and fight above their weight.
Tackle & Rigs
Light to medium spinning or conventional gear, 12-20 lb line, metal jigs, small trolling lures and bait rigs.
Landing, Handling & Release
Fight them off the drag; bleed and ice keepers fast, or keep some fresh as excellent cut and live bait.
Table Quality
Pacific bonito are good eating fresh - firm and rich, best bled and iced - though stronger than albacore, and they are prized as bait.
Common Mistakes
Not bleeding the fish for the best flavor and leaving a boiling school too soon.
Regulations & Conservation
Managed with limits that vary by region. Confirm current state and federal regulations before keeping fish. We do not give legal advice.
