Overview
The almaco jack is a powerful, deep-bodied amberjack relative that gives offshore anglers a brutal, bulldogging fight around wrecks and deep structure. Firmer and finer on the table than its bigger cousins, it is a prized catch on hard bottom and around rigs.
Identification
Almaco jacks are dark and deep-bodied with a high, sickle-shaped front dorsal fin, a faint dark bar through the eye, and a bronze-and-purple sheen. They are deeper-bodied and darker than the greater amberjack.
Range & Habitat
They range warm and temperate seas worldwide, holding over deep wrecks, reefs, rigs and seamounts on both US coasts.
Behavior & Diet
Almaco jacks are strong schooling predators that hunt fish and squid around deep structure, striking hard and fighting straight down toward the wreck.
Best Seasons
Caught year-round where seasons allow over deep structure, with warm months often best.
How to Catch Them
Drop live bait or vertical jigs to deep wrecks and rigs, or troll and cast near surfacing schools; be ready for an immediate powerful dive.
Tackle & Rigs
Heavy conventional or stout spinning gear, braided line, heavy leaders, and live-bait or vertical-jig rigs for a hard-pulling fish.
Landing, Handling & Release
Turn them fast off the drag before they reach structure; vent or descend deep-caught release fish. Bleed and ice keepers.
Table Quality
Almaco jack is good eating - firmer and milder than greater amberjack, and often free of the worms that plague larger AJs.
Common Mistakes
Fishing too light for a bulldogging fish and letting it break you off in the wreck.
Regulations & Conservation
Managed with jack and amberjack limits that vary by region. Confirm current federal and state regulations before keeping fish. We do not give legal advice.
