Overview
The albacore is the "chicken of the sea" - the true white-meat tuna and a premier offshore target on the Pacific Coast. Fast, hard-running and traveling in big schools, albacore offer fast-paced fishing and the finest canned and grilled white tuna.
Identification
Albacore are metallic dark-blue above and silver below with unmistakably long, sabre-like pectoral fins that reach past the anal fin - the surest way to tell them from other tunas.
Range & Habitat
They roam the open Pacific (and Atlantic), migrating offshore along the West Coast, following warm currents and bait far from land over deep water.
Behavior & Diet
Albacore are schooling, warm-water predators that chase anchovies, squid and small fish, boiling on the surface and traveling in fast-moving packs.
Best Seasons
The Pacific season runs roughly summer into fall as warm water and bait push the schools within range of the coast.
How to Catch Them
Trolling feathers and swimbaits to find the school, then stopping to cast jigs and drop live bait; a hooked fish often holds the school near the boat.
Tackle & Rigs
Medium-heavy offshore conventional or spinning gear, 30-50 lb line, trolling lures and live-bait rigs with fluorocarbon leaders.
Landing, Handling & Release
Fight them hard off the drag, gaff or net keepers, and bleed and ice immediately - albacore quality drops fast if not chilled.
Table Quality
Albacore is the classic white tuna - mild, firm and rich - superb grilled, seared or canned, the best of the canned tunas.
Common Mistakes
Not bleeding and icing fish immediately, and leaving a school that is still holding near the boat.
Regulations & Conservation
Managed with limits and permits that vary by region. Always confirm the current state and federal regulations before keeping fish. We do not give legal advice.
