Overview

The Arctic char is the northernmost freshwater fish in the world and one of the most beautiful salmonids, blazing crimson at spawning time. A prized catch on remote northern rivers and lakes, it combines wild scenery, hard fights and superb table quality.

Identification

Char are silvery in the sea and deep orange to brilliant red when spawning, with pale pink or cream spots on a darker body and white-edged lower fins. They resemble a brook trout but with round light spots and no worm-like markings.

Range & Habitat

They live in cold Arctic and subarctic lakes, rivers and coastal waters across the far north of Canada, Alaska and beyond, some migrating to the sea and back.

Behavior & Diet

Char feed on insects, crustaceans and small fish in cold clean water, and sea-run fish stage in river mouths on their spawning migration, when they feed and fight hard.

Best Seasons

The prime window is the short northern summer and early fall, when char run the rivers and the remote country is accessible.

How to Catch Them

Spoons, spinners and flies swung and stripped through river runs and pools; sea-run fish hit aggressively as they stage and move upstream.

Tackle & Rigs

Medium spinning or fly gear, 8-12 lb line, spoons, spinners and streamers suited to river fishing.

Landing, Handling & Release

Fight them off the drag and handle wet; many remote fisheries emphasize careful catch-and-release to protect slow-growing northern stocks.

Table Quality

Arctic char is outstanding - rich, clean and salmon-like, considered one of the finest-eating fish in the north.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating the remoteness and short season, and mishandling a slow-growing fish meant for release.

Regulations & Conservation

Northern char stocks are managed with area limits and often catch-and-release rules; many are on Indigenous lands requiring permits. Always confirm the current regulations before fishing. We do not give legal advice.
