Sand Fleas (Mole Crabs)
Sand fleas - the egg-shaped mole crabs burrowing where waves wash - are the surf's free premium bait: pompano's favorite food, harvested with a rake right where you're standing.
The best pompano bait on any beach is under your feet: mole crabs ('sand fleas') filter-feeding in the swash zone, exactly where pompano, whiting and drum root for them. A wire sand-flea rake and ten minutes at the waterline fills a bait bucket free - surf fishing's neatest closed loop: catch the bait where you fish the bait.
What it catches
Pompano (the signature pairing), whiting, black and red drum, sheepshead near structure, permit on the flats-adjacent.
Getting & keeping it
Rake the swash as waves recede (watch for the V-wakes of digging colonies); keep in damp - not flooded - sand in a shaded bucket, alive for the session. Egg-bearing ('orange') females are premium; local harvest rules occasionally apply - glance at them.
How to rig it
Through the underside and out the shell top on a #1-#4 circle or khale hook, on the classic two-hook pompano rig with a pyramid sinker and floats; fish the trough behind the first bar.
When it shines
Pompano runs (spring and fall along warm coasts), any whiting day, sandy-bottom surf everywhere the swash holds colonies.
Field tips
Fish WHERE you raked - the colony marks the feeding zone; the orange egg mass is the bite trigger (fish those first); frozen or salted fleas backstop dry days.
Common mistakes
Drowning the bucket (they need damp air, not standing water), casting past the trough where fleas and feeders actually live, and buying frozen while standing on a live colony.
